Description

2.5" x 3.5" on birch veneer (yup, wood)
watercolors
Prismacolor pencils

I'd never painted on wood before, and I couldn't wait to try it, so I really just dove in without doing any value studies or sketches. For all that it still came out ok, and I learned a lot.

The grain of the wood really pulled the paint around. Next time I either won't use watercolors, or I'll keep it to small washes. I really like the washes of dark color over the background, but without the heavy pencil line to disguise it the dark paint really inched into the flower petals.

Oh well, I have a few more, so I'll just keep trying. :)

And, because I'm always nosy about other people's color choices....
I used the following Prismacolor pencils:
White (one of the 10+ year old ones with a lot of pigment)
Light peach
Sienna Brown
Blush Pink
Clay Rose
Beige Sienna
and the Derwent Blender and Burnisher

This time around I think I used all Daniel Smith paints. Not even my beloved W&N Phthalo Turquoise or Grumbacher Academy Perylene Maroon made it in.
Quin Magenta and Quin Fuchsia (PR202)
Manganese Blue Hue (PB15)
Hansa Yellow Medium (PY97)
Lunar Earth (PBr11)
Kyanite & Bronzite

I currently have this one up for sale:
